Spelling Journals
Our main Spelling Journals are designed to cover the statutory requirements of the English National Curriculum. A condensed version of the Appendix for Spelling can be found here that fits on one A4 Sheet.
- Our Yellow Spelling Journals cover early learning of spellings and cover High Frequency Words
- The Green (Year 1), Blue (Year 2), Red (Year 3 and 4) and Purple (Year 5 and 6) Journals cover the content of the English National Curriculum.
- The Black Spelling Journals are aimed at Key Stage 3 and cover subject specific vocabulary (for example words used in Art, History and Science).
Each Journal includes 10 weeks of 10 words and where possible the words are grouped by a theme. For example, week 1 and 2 of our Term 2 Spelling Journal for Year 3 and 4 covers words that have the -ous suffix like ‘serious’ and ‘jealous’. Where they are themed, there is a short explanation of the rule too.
There is space for practicing copying, covering and recalling the words, a word search and anagrams to cater for some of the different learning styles children have.
All Spelling Journals come as instant downloadable pdfs. If you wish to order printed hard copies in bulk then please use the order form here.
Spelling Strategies
Children learn spellings in many different ways:
- sometimes they rely on their phonological knowledge (using the simple sounds of the letters)
- learning rules for certain sounds, including the different types of digraphs and trigraphs (for example consonant, vowel and split digraphs)
- some words don’t follow any particular rules and just need to be remembered – and English is full of words like this, for example, you, the, who.
They must be able to learn to spelling but more importantly they need to be able to use it in their writing. Therefore they need to develop strategies and develop their memory pathways in order to recall the complex rules involved in spelling accurately.
Our Spelling Strategy Cards suggest 24 different activities that can be used to aid retention of spellings. They come free when ordering any Spelling Journal Pack.
